Scientifically Calibrated Calculations

Mifflin-St Jeor Equation

Used as the core BMR predictor, validated by clinical reviews as the most consistent baseline predictor in modern weight management.

BMR = 10*W(kg) + 6.25*H(cm) - 5*A(y) + s (+5 Male, -161 Female)
US Navy Circumference Formula

Computes body fat percent dynamically from waist, neck, and height dimensions without requiring bioelectrical impedance scales.

Male: 86.01*log10(Waist-Neck) - 70.041*log10(Height) + 36.76Female: 163.205*log10(Waist+Hip-Neck) - 97.684*log10(Height) - 78.387
WHO Classification Standards

Classifies BMI indexes into underweight, normal weight, overweight, and obese ranges as documented by the World Health Organization.

BMI = Weight(kg) / (Height(m))^2

BODY COMPOSITION GUIDE

What is Body Fat?

Body fat, or adipose tissue, is the lipid energy storage of the body. Unlike body weight or BMI, which only measure total mass, body fat percentage evaluates the proportion of your body composition consisting of fat tissue versus lean tissue (muscle, bones, organs, and water). Knowing your body fat percentage offers a far more accurate representation of metabolic fitness and cardiovascular health, particularly for active individuals.

The US Navy Circumference Method

Developed by Dr. J.A. Hodgdon and M.B. Beckett in 1984 at the Naval Health Research Center, this method is widely accepted as a highly reliable tool that does not require expensive calipers or DEXA scans. It relies on specific biological equations using height and the circumferences of the neck, waist, and hips (for females).

MEASUREMENT STANDARDS
  • Neck: Measure just below the larynx, wrapping horizontally (in centimeters or inches).
  • Waist: Measure at the narrowest point for females, and at the level of the navel for males (in centimeters or inches).
  • Hips (Females Only): Measure at the widest point of the gluteal area (in centimeters or inches).

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How accurate is the Navy Method?

When measured correctly with a standard soft tape, the US Navy Circumference Method is accurate within a 3-4% margin of error compared to standard gold-standard DEXA scans, making it one of the most reliable and affordable estimation techniques available.

How can I lower my body fat?

Lowering body fat requires sustaining a minor, controlled caloric deficit (calories consumed below TDEE) combined with strength training to preserve existing muscle tissue, and a high-protein diet.

What is the U.S. Navy body fat standard?

The U.S. Navy body fat standards establish maximum allowable percentages for military personnel to ensure physical readiness. For males, the maximum limit ranges from 22% to 26% based on age. For females, the limit ranges from 33% to 36%.

Is 30% body fat a lot?

Whether 30% body fat is high depends entirely on biological sex. For women, 30% falls within the healthy, acceptable range (25–31%). For men, 30% is classified in the obesity range (25% and above), where health risks are elevated.

What is essential fat?

Essential body fat is required for normal physiological functioning, nerve signal transmission, hormone production, and organ protection. Dropping below essential fat thresholds (under 2-5% for males, 10-13% for females) is highly dangerous.

What is the most accurate body fat calculator?

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan is considered the gold-standard clinical reference for accuracy. However, for a free, practical online estimate, the U.S. Navy circumference method provides a highly reliable approximation using basic tape measurements.
