Goal Weight Calculator

Estimate the calorie target and how long it may take to reach your goal weight — based on your current weight, target weight, and chosen weekly pace.

A goal weight calculator connects your current body weight, your desired target weight, and your daily calorie target to produce an estimated timeline for reaching your goal. It works by calculating how much weight you need to change, dividing that by your chosen weekly pace, and estimating the number of weeks required — while accounting for the fact that your calorie needs change as your weight changes.

METHODOLOGY

How It Works

STEP 01Establish Total Weight Change Needed

Calculate the difference between your current and goal weight. For example, moving from 80 kg to 70 kg requires a 10 kg change. This is your total weight-change target.

STEP 02Choose Your Weekly Pace

Your weekly pace — typically 0.25 kg/week (mild), 0.5 kg/week (standard), or 1.0 kg/week (aggressive) — determines the required daily calorie deficit. A 0.5 kg/week pace requires approximately 550 kcal/day below your TDEE.

STEP 03Estimate Timeline

Dividing the total weight change by your weekly pace gives an estimated number of weeks. For 10 kg at 0.5 kg/week: approximately 20 weeks. As weight decreases, TDEE drops, so effective pace slows slightly toward the end.

Worked Calculation Examples

The following examples use the Mifflin-St Jeor BMR equation and standard activity multipliers — the same methodology used by the interactive calculators on this site. Figures are estimates for illustrative purposes.

Female, 80 kg → goal 68 kg, 0.5 kg/week pace

SCENARIO

Total change required: 12 kg. At 0.5 kg/week, estimated 24 weeks. BMR at start (31F, 165 cm) ≈ 1,515 kcal/day. TDEE (lightly active) ≈ 2,083 kcal/day. Daily target ≈ 1,533 kcal/day (−550 kcal deficit).

RESULT

Estimated timeline: ~24 weeks, accounting for metabolic adaptation as weight decreases toward goal.

Male, 70 kg → goal 80 kg (muscle gain), 0.25 kg/week pace

SCENARIO

Total gain required: 10 kg. At 0.25 kg/week: estimated 40 weeks. BMR (25M, 175 cm) ≈ 1,674 kcal/day. TDEE (moderately active) ≈ 2,594 kcal/day. Daily target ≈ 2,869 kcal/day (+275 kcal surplus).

RESULT

Estimated lean bulk timeline: ~40 weeks. Rate depends on training consistency and protein intake.

Lean bulking at a small surplus minimizes fat gain during muscle-building phases.

Timeline estimates are mathematical projections. Real weight change is influenced by metabolic adaptation, hormones, sleep, and adherence. A weekly loss pace above 1 kg is generally considered aggressive and may require clinical oversight. Do not adopt extreme restriction without professional support.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common Questions

What is a goal weight calculator?

A goal weight calculator estimates the daily calorie target and projected timeline required to move from your current body weight to a desired target weight, based on your metabolic baseline (TDEE) and chosen weekly pace.

How do I calculate my calorie target for a goal weight?

First calculate your TDEE (maintenance calories). Then apply the calorie adjustment for your desired weekly pace. A 0.5 kg/week loss pace requires approximately a 550 kcal/day deficit below your TDEE.

How long will it take me to reach my goal weight?

Divide your total weight change target by your chosen weekly pace. For example, a 10 kg change at 0.5 kg/week takes approximately 20 weeks mathematically. In practice, metabolic adaptation slows progress as you get closer to your goal, so allow 10–15% additional time.

What weekly pace is realistic for goal weight?

A pace of 0.25–0.5 kg per week for weight loss is widely considered safe and sustainable for most healthy adults. Faster rates (0.75–1.0 kg/week) are achievable but carry higher risk of muscle loss and are harder to sustain.

Where can I get a full interactive goal weight and timeline simulation?

Our Weight Goal Planner provides a fully interactive week-by-week projection with a dynamic chart. Enter your biometrics, goal weight, and pace to simulate your full journey with calorie targets and estimated milestone dates.
